Announcement: NEW YEAR’S CUP 2014 – Senior Levels Use New Experimental Competition Format

NEW YEAR’S CUP 2014

 January 3rd  – 6th  2014 – Bratislava, Slovakia

INTERNATIONAL SENIOR MEN, LADIES AND ICE DANCING, JUNIOR MEN AND LADIES, NOVICE, PRE-NOVICE COMPETITION – A NEW EXPERIMENTAL FORMAT OF COMPETITIONS WILL BE APPLIED IN SENIOR CATEGORIES * (See paragraph 8 for details)

* 8. CALCULATION OF RESULTS – NEW FORMAT

In accordance with Rule 367 of ISU Technical Rule Single & Pair Skating 2012 a new format will be tried out in the competition in categories Senior Men, Ladies and Ice Dance.

The competition will consist of three rounds: qualification, semi-final and final.

The final consists of the single warm-up group of 6 skaters / 5 dance couples.

The semi-final consists of 2 warm-ups with total of 12 skaters / 10 dance couples.

In the qualification the number of warm-up groups depends on number of entries.

Six best skaters will be seeded directly into the semi-final. For determining the best 6 skaters, the world standing/ranking to the day of the deadline for the entries will be used. (In case the ranking is not applicable the best technical elements score from the previous season may be used.)  The non-seeded skaters will start the competition in the qualification round where the free skating will be performed. The best six skaters from the qualification (according to the total segment score) will proceed to the semifinal.

In the semi-final the best 6 (5) qualificants (dance couples) and the 6 (5) directly seeded skaters (dance couples) will perform their short programs.

Calculation of the semi-final results and the procedure for selection of the finalists will not be based on simple order of total segment scores but will be determined by the outcome of six (five) individual „duels“. The duels will be set up and evaluated in the following way: The score of the best qualificant (1st place after the qualification) will be compared with the score of the 6th seeded skater, 2nd  qualificant with the 5th  skater and similarly up to the 6th qualificant with the top seeded skater.

The warm-up groups and the starting order in the semi-finals will be set up as follows: 1st warm-up: 1q, 6s, 2q, 5s, 3q, 4s and 2nd warm-up: 4q, 3s, 5q, 2s, 6q, 1s.  Winners of the duels will proceed to the final round, the losers will be placed on 7th to 12th place according to their score reached in the semi-final.

The free skate is performed in the final. The final place will be based solely on the score reached in the final round – the segment scores from semifinal or qualification will not be taken into account.

The starting order in the final warm-up group might not be determined by the draw but by the choice of the skaters: the skaters may choose the starting order – the first chooses the skater with the highest score in the semifinal.

(Notice: In case there will be less than 10 dance couples in the competition, the Ice Dance category will be organized in the standard competition format.)
