Olympic ‘Team Skating’ Qualifying – (Update 1 following Skate Canada results)
By Patrick Ryan
After a successful home event at Skate Canada, with gold medals won by Patrick Chan and dance team Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, along with Amelie Lacoste’s 5th place finish, Canada gained 427 points this weekend. This brings their team tally to 5,248 points. At this stage of team qualifying, it is virtually impossible for any team to catch the leading Canadians barring a virtual sweep of the gold medals at the Senior Grand Prix Final by the United States or Russia.
The United States remains in second, with 4,554 points, a tally unchanged after Skate America. In third with 4,194 points is Russia. Russia gained 118 points this weekend, with the winning ladies performer Julia Lipnitskaia and a 4th place finish from ice dancers Ekaterina Riazanova and Ilia Tkachenko. The Italians and Japanese remain competitive in fourth and fifth respectably.
The only change in rankings in the week-to-week results came from the performance of the Germans, with a 6th place finish from Nelli Zhiganshina and Alexander Gazsi in ice dancing, and 7th place finish from pair team Mari Vartmann and Aaron Van Cleave. Those placements earned Germany 209 additional points this weekend, bringing their team total to 2,888 points. This moves them ahead of the Chinese and French and into sixth place in the current results. The French team did not send athletes to Skate Canada.
The ten countries guaranteed to send a team to Sochi are: Canada, United States, Russia, Italy, Japan, Germany, China, France, Ukraine, and Great Britain. The final official team qualification results will be published by the ISU at the conclusion of the ISU Senior Grand Prix Final in December.
The Standings have been computed based upon the ISU Qualification System for XXII Olympic Winter Games, Sochi 2014 Annex A – Olympic Figure Skating Team Event
